INTERNATIONAL OPERA FESTIVALS CALENDAR 2002: GLYNDEBOURNE 17 May - 26 August Festival Opera
	Glyndebourne's institutional status is certainly more stable than that of the theaters receiving subsidies. Its ventures into unusual repertory or its engagement of controversial producers no longer raise quite the number of hackles or eyebrows as used to be the case. 	DROTTNINGHOLM 1 June - 8 September Drottningholms Slottsteater
	Another enchanted location, the restored 18th century theater with the uncomfortable seats is a unique experience. This year's festival features Handel's Giulio Cesare and Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. 	SAINT PETERSBURG 1 June - 1 July White Nights Festival
	Saint Petersburg is one of the world's most beautiful cities, and the White Nights one of the best times to be there, with people promenading until sunset (about 2 AM). An additional bonus is the possibility of encountering the Kirov Opera and Ballet on its home territory, though the repertoire is no longer exclusively Russian. The Western influence is further manifest by the presence of Placido Domingo as both singer and conductor, Marta Domingo as stage director, as well as such Englishmen as David McVicar and David Freeman. 	SALZBURG 21 July - 31 August Salzburger Festspiele
	This year's festiva, the last under Gerard Mortier,l runs the gamut from Mozart to Janacek and Shostakovich by way of both Johann and Richard Strauss. New productions include Jenufa, Nozze di Figaro, Falstaff, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Die Fledermaus and Ariadne auf Naxos, with repeats of Cosi and Don Carlo. 	Attempts to emulate Glyndebourne have been many, but Garsington looks to be establishing itself in the elite category of those that have succeeded. Young singers are given the chance to display their talents or try out new roles, while the repertory is fascinating. 	Munich's Opera Festival is in fact a showcase of the best work of the year with the best casts, too often resulting in empty trendiness. Unfortunately, there is little worth making a detour unless you're a fan of Edita Gruberova or you want to know what Zubin Mehta and Graham Vick make of Les Troyens, or see Rita Gorr in Queen of Spades or newcomer Vivica Genaux in Monteverdi's Ritorno d'Ulisse in patria. 	A relative newcomer, Glimmerglass Opera has the wherewithal to engage some of the brighter talents of the day, offer a showcase to some of the younger singers and share productions with the New York City Opera, with which it shares its director.
